The Gardens
In the words of Winfield House Gardener Stephen Crisp:
“One must understand the history of site and its intended purpose. This is a 19th century topography, a layer cake of evolution of ecology landscape. This is a 1930’s house, not a 1930’s garden, but rather a landscape of a 20th century garden. However, it has the bones of a 19th century garden.”
“Garden, Landscape is a work of art that is never finished. You don’t create it, leave it, and it becomes a static object. It is not a picture, drawing or painting. It continues to develop. A gardener orchestrates the evolution and original purpose of the garden. They are a ringmaster of the circus constantly testing and analyzing what they are doing is still working and if there is a better way of doing it. Different things inform them.”
